Lemon and Orange Granita

We’re serving up Sicilian style granita for this week’s Monday Meal.

In Sicily these icy sweet frozen treats are served with a layer of thick rich cream. It’s the perfect treat for those hot Italian days, and perfect for our scorching summer days too!

You can leave the cream out if you prefer, but after we heard Joe reminisce about those glaringly hot days in Sicily and how much he loved stirring the cream through the icy shavings, we just had to give it a go!

To make your own sugar syrup, combine 1 cup water and 1 cup sugar in a saucepan over low heat until the sugar is dissolved. Refrigerate before using.

Lemon Granita Ingredients

1 cup lemon juice
Zest 1 lemon
1 ¼ cup sugar syrup
1 cup water
Thickened cream

Method

Combine ingredients in a freezer safe container and place in the freezer.

Every hour give it a quick stir with a spoon until it really starts to freeze.

Use a fork to scrape the top of the lemon concoction and spoon the shavings into a glass.

Pour a layer of cream on top.

Orange Granita Ingredients

Juice 5 oranges
Zest 1 orange
1 ¼ cup sugar syrup
1 cup water

Method

Combine ingredients in a freezer safe container and place in the freezer.

Every hour give it a quick stir with a spoon until it really starts to freeze.

Use a fork to scrape the top of the lemon concoction and spoon the shavings into a glass.
