Back to School with Rainbow Lunch Boxes

All Victorian schools now have a healthy lunch box policy; we all know this. The problem is, how do we get our kids to eat a healthy lunch and snack if they’re as fussy as hell?

Not to mention, we have to pack these things five days a week! It gets tricky, right?

So, to help you on your school lunch box journey, we are sharing our Rainbow Lunch Box!

No, you don’t need to buy a lunch box with a rainbow on it. We are also not enforcing unicorns, but it reflects the Rainbow Lunch Box mindset. You might find yourself with the pot of gold this school year!

Okay, the first thing we have noticed about healthy school lunches is that too much of the same thing can be overbearing and too much, especially for our younger kids. They don’t need 40 blueberries; a small handful will do. They don’t need ½ cup of cherry tomatoes; pop in 2 or 3.

The same goes for baby cucumbers; one is enough. Slice that baby in half or thirds on an angle, cut off the little end bits if they don’t like them, and go from there.

Peel your little bambinos a mandarin or a small orange. We know they should peel their fruit, but we’re going for a win here; if they’re young, they are too busy playing to be peeling! They will be more inclined to eat it!

Do the sandwiches you’ve lovingly assembled so they’re healthy and delicious come home at the end of the day? How about adding half a sandwich instead of a whole one?

A small container of yoghurt with some berries or fruit is a nice little snack that won’t take them long to eat.

Fast, fresh, healthy are the goals here. If they can throw it in their mouth, or scoop it up in a couple of spoonfuls they’ll be more likely to eat it. We’re all guilty of a grab-and-go handful!

Pita triangles and dip are a great idea if your kids are tad older and many of them won’t turn their nose up at a triangle of milky cheese or a slice of cheddar! And you can’t go past a sliced boiled egg for a little kick of protein!
